Ligaments connect your bones together. A sprain occurs when a ligament is overstretched, torn or both. Sprains can occur whenever a joint is forced out of its normal position through falling, hitting or twisting it. The common symptoms of a sprain include pain, swelling, bruising as well as a reduced ability to move or use the joint. Ankle sprains are the most common type of sprain injury.

A strain can happen when either a muscle or tendon is overstretched or torn. Tendons connect muscles to bones. The severity of the strain depends on whether the injury is merely an overstretch, or is a partial or complete tear. Strains can happen suddenly or develop over a period of time. Hamstring and back injuries are among the most common strains. Acute strains are usually caused by lifting heavy objects or overstressing your muscles, while chronic strains are the result of repetitive movement of muscles or tendons. Symptoms include pain, spasms, weakness, swelling and cramping.
